Уловистое место, где держится, проходит и охотится щука, является гарантией успеха и того, что рыболов-щукарь не останется без добычи. Но если в недавние времена, когда плотность хищника была велика, такой выбор не был решающим, то в наше время иногда приходится довольно долго искать щучьи места.
И чем больше водоём, тем больше иногда занимают времени эти поиски. На Чебоксарском водохранилище, после того как упали в воду и были спилены по уровню льда сухие леса, места охоты и стоянки крупных щук переместились к старому берегу Волги и в протоки между островами. И пришлось отыскивать уловистые места, ориентируясь на новые условия.
Уловистые места на малых реках
Сразу надо оговориться, что январь и начало февраля не самое лучшее время для ловли щуки на малых реках. Правда, бывают исключения, связанные с реками, впадающими в Волгу. В устьевой части таких рек и выше на какое-то определённое расстояние щука берёт круглый год с некоторым ослаблением клёва в середине зимы.
На других реках местами щука вообще не берёт, а местами выходит по утрам и только до полудня. Лучшие выходы бывают в длительные мягкие оттепели, когда на льду образуется вязкая снеговая каша и лужи. Надо выбирать место ловли щуки, ориентируясь на устья речушек и ручьёв, впадающих в реку.
Даже ирригационные канавы, которые прокладывают на болотистых лугах для осушения этих мест, могут стать точкой ловли щуки. Это обычно устья таких канав, которые весной бывают довольно полноводны, на них есть течение, а некоторые из канав не пересыхают летом и остаются полноводными и глубокими, что привлекает сюда рыбу.
Самыми привлекательными для щуки местами на малых реках бывают расширения в русле за поворотом реки, где имеется яма глубиной до 4-5 метров. Даже малые реки имеют такие ямы, и нередко глубина в них достигает 6-7 метров. Здесь и надо выставлять жерлицы. Обычно ходовыми глубинами являются 4-5 метров, если рядом находится провал до 6-7 метров.
Другими уловистыми местами можно назвать ямы на ровном русле неподалёку от стоящего в воде дерева. Такие деревья иногда падают в воду с обрыва и стоят на дне с корнями в глине, словно в кадке. Здесь жерлицы лучше ставить ниже по течению прямо за деревьями, где образуются вихревые токи воды от стволов деревьев, стоящих в воде. Глубина здесь может быть около четырёх метров, что вполне достаточно для установки жерлиц.
